Masoor dal (quick and easy masoor dal recipe)
Masoor dal is red lentil curry and is my personal favorite . It is a red lentil curry tempered with onions , tomatoes and powdered spices .
it is quick and easy recipe to make and is very delicious. It’s the perfect dish when you crave something spicy but, don’t want to make an elaborate curry or spend too much time standing in the kitchen. You can just make the dal preparation, and put this on the stove to boil , and it gets ready in just 15-20 minutes. Meanwhile you can cook rice or any other side dishes or do any other work and dinner is ready. It’s mostly eaten with rice, and can be a meal by itself. I mostly make this quick and easy masoor dal recipe when I don’t want to cook an elaborate meal. I can just cook rice Steamed rice recipe and this lentil curry and have it as is , or with pickles or papads.
This is one of my favourite dishes to cook and eat . it requires very less and readily available ingredients and gets cooked very quickly. This masoor dal recipe is very quick and easy , where you don’t have to pre cook the masoor dal , the dal and the tempering of it gets cooked together in a deep vessel or a saucepan .
This recipe serves dal for 4 to 5 people.
Ingredients for masoor dal recipe
- Masoor dal – 1 cup
- Onions – 1 medium sized chopped
- Tomatoes – 1 medium sized chopped
- Coriander leaves – about a handful of leaves chopped
- Turmeric- ½ tsp
- Red chilli powder – 2 tsp
- Kanda lasun masala – 2 tsp (onion garlic spice powder)
- Salt to taste
- Oil- 2 tbsp
- Water – 3 glasses
Wash one cup masoor dal or red lentil properly with water at least thrice. Wash it properly so till the water on it appears to be clear. Remove the water and keep the clean dal aside .
For the tempering
Switch on the stove, in a saucepan or any deep vessel. Add two tablespoons of oil and let it heat up. Then turn the flame on medium heat and then add in one medium sized chopped onion and let them cook till they turn golden brown in color. Keep stirring them in between so that they won’t get stuck to the bottom of the pan nor get burned.
Make sure the flame is on medium , if you switch the flame to high just to change the color of the onions , the onions will change color on the outside but it will still remain raw . we need to remove its rawness and that’s why its important to cook the onions on a medium flame so that the onions wont get burned and will get evenly cooked . also keep stirring the onions in between so that they don’t stick to the bottom of the pan.
Once they turn golden brown in color , then add in one medium sized chopped tomato and cook till they turn soft.
Cooking the tomatoes well is necessary. As we do not want very raw and chunky pieces of tomatoes in our dal .
Chop them in medium size not too fine, nor too big.
Cook them properly till they leave oil on the sides , to fasten the cooking of the tomatoes, you can add about two pinches of salt.
Adding salt to the dal will fasten the cooking process. Also the tomatoes will get cooked evenly becoming soft and mushy.
Adding the powdered spices
Now add in the dry spices. Like half teaspoon of turmeric powder , two teaspoon red chilli powder,and two teaspoon kanda lasun masala ( onion garlic spice powder). It’s readily available at the grocery store but, incase if you do not have this spice available, you can just add in one teaspoon of garam masala powder.
Keep stirring the spices so that they don’t get burned .
Cook the spices by stirring them well , so that they get roasted and get cooked evenly. If you think the spices are sticking to the vessel. you can add very little water about 1 tbsp and stir well, till the water completely dries up.
Adding the washed masoor dal or red lentils
Sauté these spices for a minute or so. And then add in the washed masoor dal mix it properly. Let the spices coat the dal properly. And then quickly after stirring add three glasses of water, and one teaspoon of salt ,and about 2 teaspoons of finely chopped coriander leaves. Mix everything properly.
Stir and mix everything well. Once you put the dal to boil, you can switch the flame on high. And let it boil till it is completely cooked
Let the dal boil till the dal is fully cooked, the cooking process on a high flame may take around 15 to 20 minutes. Stir it to check the consistency it should not be very thin nor too thick, it has a semi liquid consistency.
Check that the masoor dal is properly cooked. You can take a little portion of the dal in the ladle, and check if the grains of the dal break. If the grains still don’t break, cook it for another 10 minutes by adding extra one glass of water. And let it cook till , the dal is properly cooked.
If the grains have become soft and break easily then the dal is properly cooked.
Once the dal turns thick and soft it is ready to be served.
It can be served and enjoyed with both Steamed rice recipe rice Jeera rice recipe and roti Easiest everyday Roti recipe (Whole wheat flat bread).
