Jeera rice

Jeera  which means cumin seeds, jeera rice is a simple rice recipe, it’s easy to make and tastes really good , it is rice tempered with cumin seeds and some other whole dry spices . It tastes best with dal tadka which is a curry made up of lentils , this rice recipe is usually eaten  with any veg curry Aloo matar curry recipe (potato peas curry) or non-veg curry.  It’s an easy and super delicious recipe , this recipe can replace your usual simple steamed rice , this is just an addition of flavors and spices to regular plain steamed rice . I personally enjoy this rice recipe with any dal Akha masoor dal (red lentils dal curry) , Masoor dal recipe quick and easy or especially Dal tadka recipe . I think it’s the best comfort food , you can also have some pickle and papad along with it . usually when I make it I prefer eating only a combination of jeera rice and dal fry or dal tadka . This can be eaten for lunch and dinner and takes approximately twenty minutes to prepare and cook . its an easy and hassle free and yet tasty recipe and its combination with any curry makes it a filling complete meal.


  • Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
  • Cloves          – 2
  • Bay leaf       – 2
  • Cardamom   – 2
  • Cinnamon     – 1 small stick
  • Onion long sliced – half onion
  • Washed rice – 1 and half cup
  • Salt to taste – about 1 flat teaspoon
  • Ghee – 1 teaspoon
  • Oil – 2 tablespoon
  • Coriander leaves chopped – about half cup for garnishing


In a heavy bottom vessel

Add one tsp ghee

And two tbsp oil , keep the flame of the stove low

Quickly add cinnamon , cardamom , bay leaves , cumin seeds and cloves, let them crackle, it should take approximately 5 to 10 seconds, this process would happen very quickly so pay close attention and do not let them burn , once the whole spices get heated up and the cumin seeds crackle .

Add half onion long sliced to it and let it cook till it turns light golden brown . do not make it too brown just light golden color is fine

Add washed rice to it and mix

Add 2 glasses of water and 1 tsp salt and let it boil

Let the rice boil on a high flame for 5 to 10 minutes and once the water dries up add about half small bowl of water cover and cook it and low flame .

Check the rice after 5 minutes, if it looks raw add more water approximately half a cup and then, cover and let it cook on a low flame for more 3 to 5 minutes. If it’s done then switch off the flame and serve . you can stick a knife in it to check if the grains of rice are cooked properly, if they do not feel hard and are soft and easy to break then it’s done , if the grains of rice still look uncooked or sticky , keep the stove on low flame and cover the vessel and let the rice cook for another 3 to 5 min once done you can remove it in a plate and garnish it with chopped coriander leaves and serve .

Serve it with dal tadka or any other veg or non veg curry of your choice.
