Dal tadka recipe

This is a quick and easy version of the dal tadka recipe . Dal tadka is one of my favorite dishes to cook , serve and eat .

Dal tadka is an Indian dal curry which is made up of lentils , its mostly made with pigeon pea yellow lentil .

Lentils are boiled and tempered with spices and cooked with onions and tomatoes. This recipe is easy to make and also very quick to make . Combined with rice it’s the best comfort food. This recipe has the perfect combination of spices and one would not miss having any other side dish while having this dish with rice.  This dal curry goes really well with Jeera rice recipe or even plain steamed rice Steamed rice recipe as well .

Ingredients for dal tadka recipe

  • Tur/Arhar dal (yellow lentils) – 1 and a half cup
  • Onion – 1big chopped
  • Tomato – 1 chopped
  • Ginger – 1 inch chopped
  • Garlic – 5-7cloves chopped
  • Mustard seeds- 1tsp
  • Cumin seeds -1 tsp
  • Green chillies- 2 cut into slits
  • Turmeric powder- 1tsp
  • Red chilli powder- 1 tsp
  • Coriander powder -1 tsp
  • Cumin powder-1 tsp
  • Garam masala powder- 1 tsp
  • Salt -1 tsp
  • Coriander leaves – 2tsp chopped for garnish
  • Ghee – 1 tsp
  • Oil- 2tbsp

Method

To pre cook the dal

Wash Tur/Arhar dal also known as yellow lentils with water thoroughly then pressure cook Tur/Arhar dal with one glass of water half tsp turmeric and a pinch of salt , pressure cook till three whistles and then let it cool down.

For the tempering

Meanwhile to prepare the tempering , take a saucepan or a deep vessel and put it on a medium high flame in that vessel add ghee and oil and let it heat up

Then add mustard seeds, let them crackle for 3 to 5 seconds

And then add cumin seeds let them crackle too for 3 to 5 seconds.

Crackling of the mustard and cumin seeds is important so that they don’t taste raw. Hence they should splutter properly and also pay attention to the point that they don’t get burned, hence keep the flame on low , because there are chances of them burning very quickly if kept on a high flame.

Now add slit green chillies let the chillies fry for a moment and then quickly add chopped onions and cook till they turn golden brown.

Now add finely chopped ginger and  finely chopped garlic and cook till its raw smell disappears keep stirring it so that it does not stick to the bottom of the pan.

Next add in the tomatoes and cook till they become soft. Mix well

Now add in all the dry spices like turmeric , red chilli powder , cumin powder , coriander powder , garam masala powder and salt stir well . Mix this properly so that the rawness of the dry spices goes away and its mixed well with the onions and the tomatoes .

Now finally add the cooked arhar/ tur dal to it mix well , add one cup of water to adjust the consistency. This dal is not too thick nor too thin , it is of medium liquid consistency . Stir well so that the spices and the lentils are combined d mixed well. 

Add chopped coriander leaves for garnish and serve

This can be had with plain steamed rice and tastes best with jeera /cumin rice. Jeera rice recipe
